Taree Artists Inc

Founded as the Mid North Coast Art Society in 1976, when the Taree City Council asked a local group of artists to take over the running of the annual Taree Open Art Exhibition, the group later became incorporated and changed its name to Taree Artists Inc. Taree Artists Inc. meets monthly as a group of people who are interested in art and increasing the appreciation of the visual arts within the wider community. Taree Artists Inc. holds monthly meetings, Al Fresco art days, outings, tutorials and workshops and members volunteer their time and talents to organize a number of major art events every year.
Annual Events
The Wingham Show Art Exhibition, where prizes are on offer and art works can be sold. Members Exhibitions are organized once or twice a year. Recently these have been held at the Manning Entertainment Centre, during one of its major presentations. This draws large crowds, and our members have the opportunity to sell their work. Taree Open Art Exhibition is our major event every year and all members participate to present this very successful art exhibition. As well, we have a permanent venue where our members can exhibit and sell their work throughout the year.
The Taree Open Art Exhibition is the only major nonselective annual art exhibition held in the Manning Valley and it attracts entries from the eastern states an well as many local artists. Entry forms will be available from this website in March/April*.
Judging is a significant part of the exhibition. It encourages artists to enter their best works and allows them to have the critique of experienced art practitioners. Judges are chosen for their experience and expertise in the art world. Margaret Sivyer judged the 2008 Art Prize. She follows many well known art practitioners such as Brian Langer, former Director of Tamworth regional Gallery, Nick Mitzevich, Director of Newcastle Regional Gallery and artists Colin Grant, Graham Cox, Ken Strong, Brian Stratton, Amanda McLean, John Wilson, Pamela Thalban-Ball, and Lloyd Rees to mention just a few.
There is a prize of $1000 for the work judged best in the exhibition, as well as 1st and 2nd prizes for all 8 sections in the exhibition. These include works on board or canvas, paintings using any water-based medium, works using pastel (The Philippa Clyne Memorial Prize), Drawing, Print making and Mixed Media, miniatures, 3-D works including sculptures, pottery, installations and mobiles.and works done by members of Taree Artists Inc. All works at the exhibition are for sale and many are sold each year.
The success of the exhibition is reliant on generous members of our community. Work is done by members of Taree Artists Inc. and contributions are made by many individuals and organizations, without whose sponsorship we would not be able to offer close to $5000 total prize money.
Like all art societies, we welcome new members who bring new ideas and energies to us. We hope they will enjoy our workshops and activities and contribute their time and talent to our society, and to the visual arts in our area.
Taree Artist Inc. meets every 3rd Wednesday of the month in the Cundletown Memorial Hall, Main Street, Cundletown. 9 to 11am (not in July and December).
