Prize Winners 2009

Judge Reg Richardson AM selected the following six works as 2009 prizewinners.

WINNER OF THE $10,000 MAJOR PRIZE  is the 2D mixed media work titled'Chickentown' by artist Robert Mitchell of Shallow Bay, Great Lakes NSW.  The judge's comments on this work were  ' Mitchell's mixed media work is that of a practiced artist, demonstrating a high level of competence and fluency. The subject matter is easy to look at and humorous to the viewer.  Perhaps not so to the chooks who may be unaware of their bleak future.  A terrific work which will be a valuable addition to the Greatrer Taree City Art Collection'.

The three works to attract the $1,000 PRIZES FOR OUTSTANDING WORKS IN  2D are shown below.

'Shadows Echo', an oil on board work entered by Wentworthville artist Stephen Caldis, is shown below.   Judge's comments on this work were: 'A highly skilled (slick in the best sense) piece.  Engaging to the eye and executed with assured technique and competency'.

'Roly-Poly Landscape', a 2D work in oil entered by Gunnedah artist Yvette Hugill, is shown below, and judge's comments on this work were:  'An attractive, detailed work by an artist at one with the land, showing a technique which perfectly captures the colours and variety of our landscape'.

The two works awarded the $1,000 PRIZES FOR OUTSTANDING WORKS IN 3D are shown below.

The first is the work (shown below) of Tinonee artist Lewis Alessandro titled 'Garrawi'.  Judge's comments were:  'A highly imaginative work, a sulphur crested cockatoo made from recycled cutlery.  A quirky, technically skilled work by an artist of talent and imagination'.

'Under the Hammer', a work in steel, cast iron, wood and glass, by Double Bay artist Sam Deal also attracted a 3D $1,000 prize and is shown below. Judge's comments were: ' Sam Deal has used an interesting mix of materials to create a forceful work. The positioning of the glass model of the world ( Ed -on the anvil but not shown in this artist's image) demonstrates a relevance to international events'.
