Artist’s statementIf you look, beauty surrounds you everywhere and that is something that I have remained focussed on for the past 10 years. Sometimes life gets so busy you don’t have the time or the patience to stop and smell the flowers. I paint serene combinations of colour, atmosphere and mood that make you look and remember the joy and solitude that gets hidden in everyday life. The ephemeral delicacy and translucence of a petal to the blazing flickering fire remain constants in my work. Velvet, feathers, lace, skyscapes, waterscapes and the human form fascinate and drive my obsession to paint daily. I choose objects and subjects that I have seen using a myriad of materials. These range from tempera, gouache, resin, water colour, pastel and oil. Artists that have inspired me include Rembrandt, Tim Storrier, Arthur Boyd, Manet and William Robinson.
Artist, Julie Slavin
I have been creating images for as long as I can remember. Being an artist has made me a better photographer. Technical know-how coupled with an eye for composition, tone, and mood turns the camera into another fine-art tool. The most important thing about photography for me is that it’s fun. Going out into the world and engaging in it with a purpose is extremely fulfilling.
I have been working at the Manning Regional Art Gallery for the past nine years being involved with most exhibitions, curating, researching and archiving.
Artist, Jo Ernst
I am mostly known for my figurative work - sensual nudes and portraits. I also enjoy landscape and find my new surroundings in the Manning particulalry inspiring. I work primarily in pastel, ink and oil, loosely working these mediums to explore the emotional qualities of my subjects. My personal vision comes from a love of beauty, a sense of the mysterious and an appreciation of the diversity of human nature and form.
I studied in France with Ted Seth Jacobs, a tutor from the Arts Students League, New York and at Paddington Art School, Sydney with Stephen Wesley Gorton. I began exhibiting and teaching in 1993 and my work is on display locally at Bowers Cafe' and Gallery, The Artisans Retreat, Mondrook and Katoomba Fine Art in the Blue Mountains.
